About Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (NYSE: NAK)
Northern Dynasty is a mineral exploration and development company based in Vancouver, Canada which holds indirect interests in over 600 sq. miles of mineral claims in southwest Alaska, USA. Northern Dynasty's principal asset is a 50% interest in the Pebble Limited Partnership (“PLP” or “the Pebble Partnership”), established in July 2007 as a 50:50 partnership between a wholly-owned affiliate of Northern Dynasty and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anglo American plc. PLP is proposing to undertake an important mineral development project in southwest Alaska, in an area that hosts one of the largest concentrations of copper, gold, molybdenum and silver in the world.
The Pebble Project, which lies on Alaska state land designated for mineral development, is currently in the pre-feasibility and pre-permitting phase, with some of the most extensive environmental studies ever undertaken for a resource development project in the state of Alaska. The project is located 200 miles southwest of Anchorage and is situated approximately 1,000 feet above sea-level, 65 miles from tidewater on Cook Inlet and presents favourable conditions for successful mine site and infrastructure development.
To the end of 2012, Northern Dynasty and the Pebble Partnership have invested some $680 million in the Pebble Project, including more than $120 million on environmental and socioeconomic studies. Under the terms of the Pebble Limited Partnership Agreement, Anglo American is required to elect to commit $1.5 billion in staged investments in order to retain its 50% interest in the Pebble Project. Funds provided by Anglo American are currently being invested in comprehensive exploration, engineering, environmental and socioeconomic programs toward the future development of the Pebble Project. Northern Dynasty and the Pebble Partnership expect to complete a National Economic Impact Study (NEIS) and Project Description in order to undertake a broad-based public engagement program and
initiate project permitting in 2013.
The Pebble Project promises important benefits for the Alaskan economy with significant capital investment and job creation. It has tremendous potential for spill-over effects to the rest of the United States, as it is unquestionably one of the largest foreign investment projects planned for the next five years.
